Brief Introduction of Monel 400


Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy that is hardened by cold working only. Monel 400 has low corrosion rate in flowing seawater, therefore it is widely used in marine applications. Monel 400 also has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in most freshwaters. Monel 400 can be used in temperatures up to 1000 ºF. The alloy has great mechanical properties at subzero temperatures.

Material Advantages of Monel 400


Monel 400 is an alloy primarily composed of nickel and copper, with nickel typically constituting about 63% of the composition, supplemented by copper and small amounts of iron and other elements. This alloy is renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine and chemical processing environments. Here are some key advantages of Monel 400:

  • Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: Monel 400 is particularly suited for use in marine and chemical environments, where it resists corrosion by seawater and various acids, bases, and saline solutions. It also has high resistance to stress corrosion cracking caused by chlorides.

  • Strong Mechanical Properties: Monel 400 exhibits good mechanical properties at room temperature and maintains strength and toughness at lower temperatures, making it practical for use in cold environments.

  • High-Temperature Performance: Although the strength of Monel 400 may decrease at higher temperatures, it maintains good corrosion resistance up to temperatures of 537 degrees Celsius (about 1000 degrees Fahrenheit).

  • Good Weldability: Monel 400 can be welded using various techniques, including Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), with excellent performance in the welded joints.

  • Machinability: Although Monel 400 is somewhat difficult to machine due to its hardness, it can still be cut and shaped using conventional machining methods.

Monel 400 is essential in heat exchangers, chemical plant equipment, and boiler feeders. It is ideal in wire or rod form and is excellent for trolling wire due to its resistance to seawater.
